What is Acne?
Acne is a very common skin condition that affects around 95% of people during their lifetime, whether that's in teenage years or during adulthood. It is characterised by the appearance of inflamed red spots, blackheads, and cysts, commonly found on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders. Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and bacteria, leading to inflammation and breakouts. Common causes of Acne include:
Hormonal Changes
Excess Oil Production from Overactive Sebaceous Glands
A Build up of Dead Skin Cells
Genetics
Diet & Lifestyle
If you're struggling with Acne and want to reduce breakouts, our Lynton Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a powerful solution. It can be used as a standalone Acne treatment or combined with acid peels for enhanced results, helping you achieve clearer, brighter, and smoother skin.
All of our Acne treatments in our Stoke-on-Trent clinic begin with an Advanced Skin Consultation, where we create a bespoke treatment plan tailored to your skin’s needs.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment for acne that works by targeting both active breakouts and the underlying causes of acne. Using controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light, IPL penetrates the skin and is absorbed by pigment (melanin) and hemoglobin in the blood, generating heat that destroys acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes) and reduces inflammation. This process helps to clear existing breakouts while preventing future ones from forming.
In addition to eliminating bacteria, IPL helps to shrink overactive sebaceous glands, reducing excess oil (sebum) production, which is a key contributor to clogged pores and breakouts. The light energy also stimulates collagen production, accelerating skin healing and helping to improve acne scars, uneven texture, and post-inflammatory redness.
Over a series of treatments, IPL can significantly reduce breakouts, minimize acne scarring, and leave your skin looking clearer, smoother, and more balanced. It is a clinically proven solution for those struggling with persistent acne and offers an effective alternative to traditional medications or harsh topical treatments.

IPL skin treatments using the Lynton Excelight system are suitable for a variety of skin concerns, including Acne, Rosacea, Thread Veins, Pigmentation and Fine Lines and Wrinkles. Most Skin Types can benefit from IPL, but suitability depends on factors such as your specific skin type, tone, and concern. During your consultation, our experienced practitioner will assess your skin and medical history to determine if IPL is the right treatment for you. While IPL is highly effective for many, it may not be suitable for darker skin tones or certain conditions, so a personalised assessment is essential to ensure safe and effective results.
The number of treatments you require depends on the type of treatment you choose. Recommended number of sessions are as follows:
Acne = 1-6 sessions
Immediately after IPL skin treatment, it is normal for your skin to appear slightly red, similar to a mild sunburn, and feel warm to the touch. Some clients may also experience mild swelling, particularly in more sensitive areas, which usually subsides within a few hours. If you are treating pigmentation concerns, the targeted spots may temporarily darken before flaking off over the next few weeks as the skin heals. Your skin may also feel slightly dry or sensitive, so it’s important to keep it moisturised and protected.
To ensure the best results, avoid direct sun exposure, use SPF 30 or higher, and steer clear of harsh skincare products like retinoids or exfoliants for at least 48 hours. These effects are temporary, and your skin will gradually settle, revealing a clearer, more radiant complexion in the following weeks.
Although very rare, there is a small chance that the area may burn or blister which can result in a temporary lightening or darkening of the skin. To avoid such side effects we will always ask you to attend a consultation prior to treatment, so that we can perform a small patch test and assess your skins suitability for treatment. Once we have performed the patch test, we will ask you to monitor the area over 48 hours to check for any adverse side effects.
Some people have much better results using IPL compared to prescribed creams from the doctor, however it completely depends on each individual and what works best for your skin. Many people come to us because they are tired of waiting to see the doctor and exhausted by the number of unsuccessful treatments they have tried.
We do not recommend laser or IPL treatments if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. While there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that these treatments are harmful during pregnancy or breastfeeding, the hormonal changes in your body can make your skin more sensitive and prone to adverse reactions, such as irritation or pigmentation changes.
For your safety and the safety of your baby, it is best to wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding before starting laser or IPL treatments. We encourage you to book a consultation after this period to discuss your options and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
To maintain your results at home it is important to know what skincare products to use for your skin type as well as an understanding of what triggers your acne. Sometimes Acne is caused by oily skin and for others it can be a result of a damaged skin barrier caused by dryness. During your consultation our Skin Therapist will assess your skin and advise on the best products for you. Typical products that are used to treat Acne include: Salicylic Acid (BHA), Benzoyl Peroxide, Clindamycin, Adapalene, Azelaic Acid and AHA's such as Glycolic Acid.
Some Acne medications are contraindications for IPL treatment. Oral antibiotics such as Lymecycline and Minocycline make you more sensitive to light therefore you will need to wait at least 4 weeks after your last dose before you can receive treatment. If you are currently taking Roaccutane, you will need to wait 6 months after your last dose to receive treatment. We will ask you what medications you are taking during your consultation so that we can check there is no interference. We always advise that you check with your GP before receiving treatment to ensure it is safe for you to proceed.
Due to Lynton's Advanced Technology our IPL treatments are relatively pain-free. No anaesthesia is required, however we do apply a cool gel to help maintain comfort. People often describe the sensation like the flick on an elastic band. We are able to change our machine settings at any point so that the treatment feels right for you.
