What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic and often misunderstood skin condition that primarily affects the face. It is characterised by persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and flare-ups of bumps or white spots that resemble acne. Rosacea most commonly occurs on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin, and can sometimes affect the eyes, causing them to feel dry, irritated, or appear bloodshot, a condition known as ocular rosacea.
What causes Rosacea?
Though the exact cause of rosacea remains unknown, experts believe it is linked to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is most common in adults between the ages of 30 and 50, particularly in those with fair skin however, it can affect anyone. If remained untreated rosacea can worsen over time leading to more pronounced redness, skin thickening and increased discomfort.
Rosacea Flare-ups can often be triggered by external factors such as sun exposure, extreme temperatures, wind, stress, hot or spicy foods, alcohol, and some skincare products. Triggers for each individual can vary, meaning managing the condition is a personalised process.
What types of Rosacea Can We Treat?
Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR):
Persistent redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels (telangiectasia) on the face. It often causes a sensation of burning or stinging.
This type of Rosacea is marked by acne-like breakouts, including red bumps (papules) and pus-filled pimples (pustules), often alongside facial redness and inflammation.

If you're looking for expert Rosacea treatment in Stoke-on-Trent (Newcastle-under-Lyme), Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy offers a safe, non-invasive solution to reduce facial redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels. At our Stoke-on-Trent clinic, we use advanced IPL technology to treat the symptoms of rosacea, delivering lasting relief and clearer, calmer skin.
IPL works by delivering controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin, where it is absorbed by the blood vessels causing redness. This absorption generates heat, which gently breaks down the overactive vessels responsible for rosacea symptoms. These tiny, damaged vessels are then naturally eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system.
As the treated vessels are gradually reabsorbed and fade, the skin appears calmer and more evenly toned. IPL not only reduces visible redness but also helps to soothe inflammation and suppress future flare-ups by targeting underlying triggers. In addition, the light energy stimulates collagen production, which supports overall skin health and strengthens the skin barrier, leading to a smoother, more resilient complexion.
At The Laser Lounge UK we have helped many Rosacea clients across Stoke-on-Trent see dramatic improvements in their rosacea symptoms, with many noticing visible results in just a few sessions. Our personalised treatment plans are tailored to your skin's unique needs, ensuring optimal results with minimal downtime.

IPL skin treatments using the Lynton Excelight system are suitable for a variety of skin concerns, including Acne, Rosacea, Thread Veins, Pigmentation and Fine Lines and Wrinkles.
Most Skin Types can benefit from IPL, but suitability depends on factors such as your specific skin type, tone, and concern. During your consultation, our experienced practitioner will assess your skin and medical history to determine if IPL is the right treatment for you. While IPL is highly effective for many, it may not be suitable for darker skin tones or certain conditions, so a personalised assessment is essential to ensure safe and effective results.
The number of treatments you require depends on the type of treatment you choose. The recommended number of sessions are as follows:
Rosacea = 1 - 6 sessions
Thread Veins = 1 - 3 sessions
Immediately after IPL skin treatment, it's normal for the skin to appear slightly red, similar to a mild sunburn, and feel warm to the touch. Some clients may experience mild swelling, especially in more sensitive areas, which typically subsides within a few hours. When treating conditions like thread veins and rosacea, slight bruising or swelling may also occur, but these effects are usually temporary and fade within a few days.
Your skin may feel a bit dry or sensitive following the treatment, so keeping it well-moisturised and protected is key. For best results, avoid direct sun exposure, apply SPF 30 or higher daily, and steer clear of harsh skincare products, such as retinoids or exfoliants, for at least 48 hours post-treatment.
These mild side effects are short-lived, and as your skin settles over the following weeks, you'll begin to notice a clearer, calmer, and more radiant complexion.
We do not recommend laser or IPL treatments if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. While there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that these treatments are harmful during pregnancy or breastfeeding, the hormonal changes in your body can make your skin more sensitive and prone to adverse reactions, such as irritation or pigmentation changes.
For your safety and the safety of your baby, it is best to wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding before starting laser or IPL treatments. We encourage you to book a consultation after this period to discuss your options and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
To maintain and enhance the results of your rosacea treatment at home, it’s important to use the right medical-grade skincare tailored to your skin’s needs and triggers. Rosacea can be aggravated by inflammation, environmental stressors, and inappropriate skincare, so a gentle, targeted routine is essential. During your consultation, our Skin Therapist will assess your skin thoroughly and recommend the most effective products for you, including options from trusted dermatology providers like Dermatica.
Key ingredients commonly prescribed for rosacea include Azelaic Acid, which helps calm inflammation and reduce redness, and Niacinamide, known for strengthening the skin barrier and soothing irritation. Soolantra (ivermectin) is another effective treatment option, often prescribed for inflammatory rosacea with bumps or pustules. It works by targeting underlying inflammation and Demodex mites, which are thought to contribute to rosacea symptoms.
Low-strength Tretinoin may also be included in your Dermatica prescription to gently support skin renewal and reduce long-term redness, depending on your skin’s tolerance.
Consistent sun protection is essential—rosacea-prone skin is especially reactive to UV exposure. We always recommend using a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher every day to protect your skin and maintain your results.
IPL for Rosacea is an effective, long-lasting treatment that helps reduce redness, visible blood vessels, and inflammation associated with rosacea. IPL works by targeting the underlying causes of rosacea, providing significant relief and improving skin appearance.
While IPL helps to manage existing rosacea symptoms, it doesn’t prevent future flare-ups or redness from occurring. To maintain your results and avoid triggers, following proper aftercare instructions is essential.
Due to Lynton's Advanced Technology our IPL treatments are relatively pain-free. No anaesthesia is required, however we do apply a cool gel to help maintain comfort. People often describe the sensation like the flick on an elastic band. We are able to change our machine settings at any point so that the treatment feels right for you.
