Piercing Change
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEAN MY NEW PIERCING?
Clean your piercings twice a day using a Sterile Saline Solution. This will help with the skins natural healing process and prevents infection. Before cleaning, make sure you wash your hands to minimise the spread of bacteria.
USING STERILE CLEANING SPRAY?
Hold the canister a few inches away from your piercing and spray both the front and back of the piercing exits.
CREATING YOUR OWN STERILE SALINE SOLUTION?
Boil a kettle and dissolve two teaspoons of Sea Salt in boiling hot water. Allow this to cool to room temperature before use. Dip a clean cotton bud into your saline solution and clean both the front and back of your piercing exits.
HOW DO I DRY MY NEW PIERCING?
Dry your piercings using a lint free gauze, or clean kitchen roll. Properly drying your piercing will help to minimise the risk of irritation bumps.
With clean hands, check the ends of your jewellery are tight as cleaning the wound and movement from daily activities can cause the ends to come loose.
DO NOT:
Twist or turn your jewellery as this will disrupt the healing process.
Touch your piercing with dirty hands.
Sleep on your piercing.
DO:
Regularly check your jewellery ends to ensure they are secure.
Keep hydrated by drinking lots of water.
Keep the area free from any make-up and other cosmetic products.
Return to the clinic if you have any concerns.
Change your pillowcases regularly to avoid infection.
Be careful when pulling clothes over your head.
Some cartilage ear piercings will need to be downsized after a certain amount of time to avoid the piercing healing at an angle. A longer bar is used during piercing to allow room for initial swelling however once this has reduced, it is important to downsize to avoid extra movement of the bar. Jewellery should be downsized after:
Tragus / Conch / Flat / Helix / Forward Helix
4-6 weeks
Snug / Anti-Tragus
8-10 weeks
Approximate healing times are as follows:
Ear Lobes
3-6 months
Flat / Helix / Tragus / Conch
6-9 months
Daith / Rook / Forward Helix
9-12 months
Industrial
12-18 months
It it important NOT to change your piercings until it is full healed. Healing before this time can cause problems such as swelling and infection. If you are unsure whether your piercing is ready to be changed then you can check with us before doing so.
If you would like us to change your piercing jewellery for you, then you can book in for a 'Piercing Change' with one of our qualified piercers.
