The main difference between IPL and laser is that IPL emits a broad spectrum of high intensity light, which is emitted at multiple wavelengths. IPL is used for hair removal, with the added bonus of rejuvenating the skin, in the treated area. Laser hair removal emits a single focussed and precise wavelength, which is optimised specifically for hair removal.
For some people IPL hair removal is completley permanent. However, results vary from person to person and can be influenced by hormonal changes and existing health conditions. Most people will notice at least a 70-90% reduction in hair, if not complete hair removal. Any hair that does grow back tends to be lighter and more sparse.
We aim to ensure all of our clients remain comfortable throughout the procedure however, it is normal to feel a warm flicking sensation, as this means that the treatment is working. You should not feel any intense pain..
CONSULTATION - For your consultation appointment, hair must be present in the area to be treated, so that we can easily idenitfy your hair type. Therefore in prepration for your consultation please do not completley shave the area. You will however, need to shave a small patch, so that the patch test can be performed. The hair must be it's natural colour and should not be bleached or coloured.
TREATMENT - Please arrive to your appointment with the area to be treated completley shaven, it is recommended that you shave your hair the day before your appointment. Hair must be present in the follicle for effective treatment to take place therefore waxing, plucking, threading and hair removal creams are not advisable, for at least one month prior to, and for the duration of, the treatment course.
For Body Hair Removal - An average of 6-8 sessions are required, with 6-8 week intervals between treatments.
For Facial Hair Removal - It can take up to 12 treatments to achieve desired results, with 4-6 week treatment intervals.
For Vascular Lesions/Rosacea - 1-5 Treatments are required (depending on the type of lesion), at 4-6 week intervals.
For Pigmentation - 1-3 Treatments are required, at 4-6 week intervals.
For Acne - Typically 6 treatments are required at 2-3 week intervals. Top-ups are required as and when necessary.
Further sessions may be required if any future hormonal changes result in new hair growth. Therefore, it is recommended to have a maintainence session every 12 months, to keep stray hairs at bay.
The treatment is safe to use on most skin types however, it cannot be performed on Black Skins e.g Afro-Carribean Skin (Fitzpatrick Skin Type VI). The treatment is also not suitable for people of dual heritage where their parents, or grandparents, are a Skin Type VI (e.g Afro-Carribean).
The reason for this is that Black skin contains a high level of melanin. When treated with Intense Pulse Light the melanin in the skin absorbs the light emitted by the IPL handpiece and produces heat. Heating of the melanin in the skin may result in burns and/or unwanted pigment changes. Black skin can only be treated with an Nd:YAG laser.
Red, Blonde and Grey hairs will not respond to IPL treatment, because they do not have any melanin. Some lighter haired clients can achieve desired results, however it can be a longer process.
There is currently no testing to state whether IPL treatment has an effect on pregnant or breastfeeding women however, it is recommended that you do not have IPL treatment until post pregnancy/breastfeeding, when your hormones have regulated and your menstrual cycle returns. This will allow you to get the most out of your treatment as hormonal changes may negativley influence the efficacy of treatment results.
You must not apply fake tan for at least 10-14 days prior to treatment, to avoid any unwanted reactions. It is also advised that you do not have IPL treatment for at least 4 weeks post sun/sun-bed exposure, and you should allow time for the skin to return to it's natural colour. It is strongly advised to use an SPF30+ throughout the duration of your treatment course and to avoid skin exposure for 1 month, following your treatment. Pigment from tan will absorb the light produced by the IPL machine and use it to produce heat within the skin. This may results in burns or unwanted pigment change.
At your consultation you will be asked to state if you are taking any medication so that we can assess if these will interefere with your treatment. If you are taking medication it is always a good idea to check with your GP first, so that they can advise you whether it is safe for you to recieve treatment.
It is a legal requirement that all new clients attend a consultation and recieve a patch test at least 48 hours before your first treatment. The consultation is designed to assess whether you are an ideal candidiate for treatment and to talk you through the treatment process and your expectations.
A £20 deposit is required to secure your booking, this is put in place to protect our small business. Your deposit amount is completley reedemable against any treatment cost.
